Winterset 2007

Winterset to kick off again November 10th, at the Royal Bay Restaurant & Conference Center. This year’s event theme is, “A Heart That Hopes.” The Special Advocacy Network deals with our “broken children.” Children who are victims from all kinds of abuse relationships.

The Delaware County Child Special Advocacy Network board of directors announced Monday that this year’s fundraiser gala will include great auction items and door prizes. It will begin at 6:00 P.M. with the opening of the silent auction. Dinner will be served at 7:00 P.M. There will be a short informative video presentation about DCCSAN and the need of “our children.”

A live auction will follow handled by Leroy Hendren, a local auctioneer. Many unique auction items have been donated, including a trip to Israel, golfing vacations, a full dressed golf cart, jewelry items, a gourmet eating extravaganza with the Townsends and Bestmans, beautiful art pieces, commemorative footballs from our own District Champion Grove Ridgerunners and tickets to the OU/Texas football game.

Special entertainment this year will include the return of the J. Giles Band, with music and fun for everyone. The organization was founded in 1994 to help focus specifically on the needs or our kids across Delaware County. The center, which is funded entirely from donations and operating grants works with about 250 kids a year. The “network” includes a broad representation from across the country; the public, law enforcement, social services, the District Attorney’s office and various other professionals.

The object of DCCSAN is to reduce the “system” trauma whenever possible; provide appropriate support and a psychological treatment program when necessary. Full time network employees include a facility manager, forensic interviewer and a staff psychologist.

This is the one time of year when the board goes to the public for donations. With the past success as a measuring stick, 60% of the operating budget will be made in the one night of giving by our community.

Board members encourage local participation in the once a year fundraiser to keep the network active and help provide “a heart that hopes.”

Students SCREAM for Careers

For sixteen area students, last week proved most exciting as they built their own skateboard by attending SCREAM (Summer Camp in Robotics, Engineering And Manufacturing), sponsored by Northeast Technology Center, NEO A&M College, Tech Prep, Grand Lake Manufacturers' Council, and Malone's CNC Machining of Grove. The purpose of the camp was to introduce young people to careers in manufacturing, robotics, engineering and graphic design. Last Thursday was spent at Malone's, and the campers were given first-hand knowledge and experience of what a machine shop does. Owner/president Don Malone and his staff donated the use of the shop, and the day was spent in the fabricating of the aluminum decks of the skateboards.

The campers were able to follow the progress of their own skateboard, often doing the hands-on work themselves. They watched as the holes were drilled into their aluminum plates for the wheel trucks; they were allowed to use hand grinders to grind creative designs into their plates; they watched as "SCREAM 2006" and their names were engraved onto the plates; they were able to choose a deck design and watch as a CNC mill cut their plate into the pre-set shape; they were able to check for quality and precision of the cutting and hole placement; and they were able to watch as their plates were bent into the traditional skateboard shape. The employees took each group of four under their wings and explained in detail their role at Malone's. It was often hard to tell who was having the most fun. When the day was done, each student had his or her custom-designed skateboard deck ready to take back to the tech center for final assembly on Friday. It was obvious from the students' comments that the visit to Malone's was well received, as many of them got to experience new activities and see things they had never seen before.

"Kids have a misconception about what kind of careers can be found in a machine shop," said Don Malone. "We have people involved in accounting, manufacturing, quality control, programming, engineering, machine set-up, assembly, riveting, and sheet metal work. Today's machine shop is not a dirty place...there are many high-tech pieces of equipment in here. We take pride in what we do and the cleanliness of our shop shows it," he adds.

Prior to the visit, Malone, along with representatives from Northeast Tech, NEO A&M College, Grand Lake Manufacturer's Council, and Tech Prep, met to discuss ways the camp could be offered which would teach students about manufacturing, expose them to many career fields, and give them some hands-on experience, as well as allow them to take home something tangible. A skateboard idea was developed, and Malone created a prototype, using his shop's facilities, to test the practicality of the project. It proved successful, as the process involved layout, inspection, sheet metal work, CNC operations for trimming and design, and grinder work for design effects. The students had visited NEO A&M College earlier in the week and learned about measurements and tolerances, as well as quality control. The campers also designed five deck styles. The following day was spent in one of Northeast Tech's computer labs designing vinyl decals for the underside of the skateboards. Friday was assembly day and an awards presentation. The day at Malone's wrapped up with a group session as Don spoke to the campers about the manufacturing process, how a team effort was involved, and how a mistake in a process affects those on down the line. The campers left with an appreciation of what team work is all about.

Third Graders Go to Work

Mrs. Holt’s Third Grade Class visited Malone's CNC Machining Inc. as part of the Delaware, Ottawa and Craig Counties 3rd Graders go to work program. Malone's CNC Machining Inc. is a manufacturer of Government Aircraft Spares. The class enjoyed an extensive tour through the facilities at Malone’s that included: Mock interviews, packing parts, computer programming, running machines and office protocol. The students were entertained by the General Manager; Bryan Brasher and the “Interview” process, which included an example of a good and a bad interviewee. Todd Zieba headed the tour of the machine shop area and demonstrated how the planning, computer programming and finally the machining work together to create products. Malone's CNC Machining Inc. machined a Ridge Runner plaque and a small hammer as examples that the students took home with them as gifts. The students then had hands on experience in the Shipping and Receiving Department with Jackie Bandy packaging their products for shipment. The highlight of the tour may well have been Malone’s mascot Harold a 26 year old African Grey Parrott and the end of the tour which included pizza and soda. Malone's CNC Machining Inc. hopes the students of Grove Elementary school enjoyed their visit and have future dreams of becoming tomorrows engineers and machinists and office support staff.
